About the Company

Great Bear Rainforest Essential Oils produces unique essential oils derived from natural conifer needles sustainably wild-harvested in the Great Bear Rainforest region. This social enterprise is a partnership between Metlakatla Stewardship Society and Nuxalk Development Corporation.

In 2007, Coastal First Nations began researching ways to derive essential oils from the conifer trees that grow wild in the pristine reaches of the Great Bear Rainforest. These trees have grown naturally in the coastal forests of British Columbia for millennia.

Currently, Great Bear RainforestTM Essential Oils are sold wholesale for use in beauty, health, perfumery, and home care products.

About the Oils

Great Bear RainforestTM Essential Oils are collected using a steam distillation process to extract the oils from the conifer needles. Working on-site near where the boughs are gathered in the Bella Coola and Prince Rupert regions of British Columbia, workers collect the needles from salvaged or pruned tree boughs while the needles are still green and fresh. Varieties of Great Bear RainforestTM Essential Oils include Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, Lodgepole Pine, Western Hemlock, Shore Pine, and Western Redcedar.

History and Governance

Great Bear Rainforest Essential Oils started as a Non-Timber Forest Products project of the Great Bear Initiative Society. The goal was to find culturally appropriate value-added products from the Great Bear Rainforest that would provide long-term sustainable and meaningful employment for remote communities, while at the same time protecting the forests. After many years of research and development, with pilot projects in several member First Nations, Great Bear Rainforest Essential Oils is now a partnership between the Metlakatla Stewardship Society and the Nuxalk Development Corporation.

Great Bear Rainforest Essential Oils is a partner of the Great Bear Business Corporation and all use of the GREAT BEAR mark and Great Bear Rainforest trademark is under license from the Great Bear Business Corporation.
